The Max Planck Institutes for Informatics (Saarbruecken), Software Systems (Saarbruecken and Kaiserslautern), and Security and Privacy (Bochum) invite outstanding students and professionals to apply for their fully funded research internships in computer science.
This prestigious opportunity allows participants to engage in cutting-edge research while working with globally renowned scientists in one of the world’s leading research environments.
These internships are open to exceptional Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral students worldwide, as well as to talented individuals from industry who wish to gain hands-on academic research experience.
The program welcomes interns throughout the year, although most choose to join during the summer months (May to August). Each intern is paired with a dedicated faculty mentor whose research area aligns with the intern’s interests and background.
A World-Class Research Experience
Interning at a Max Planck Institute means working alongside top-tier researchers on projects spanning the full spectrum of computer science—from artificial intelligence and algorithms to software systems, cybersecurity, and data science. Interns actively contribute to ongoing research and may even co-author publications presented at major international conferences.
The internship experience offers a stimulating, multicultural, and English-speaking environment, making it ideal for aspiring researchers aiming to launch or strengthen their academic careers. Moreover, the program encourages interdisciplinary projects that connect computer science with social sciences, economics, law, or the humanities.
Fully Funded Support
All internships are fully funded, covering living expenses, housing, and round-trip travel to and from Germany. Interns also receive a monthly stipend sufficient to cover their living costs comfortably. The standard internship duration is 12 to 14 weeks, though longer periods can be arranged depending on mutual agreement between the intern and mentor.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants should have a solid foundation in computer science—equivalent to at least the first three years of an undergraduate degree—along with an interest in research. The program welcomes diversity and particularly encourages applications from underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
