Join UN-Habitat as Writer & Copy Editor — Call for Applications

Are you passionate about urban development, social justice, and storytelling? UN-Habitat is seeking a Writer & Copy Editor under the “Habitat 4” call — an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to sustainable, inclusive cities across the globe. With this role, you’ll help shape narratives that amplify voices in underserved communities and drive change through powerful communication.

What is “Habitat 4”?

The “Habitat 4” call invites applications for a critical role within UN-Habitat’s operations. The position is part of their ongoing commitment to building inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities by 2030.

As a Writer & Copy Editor, you’ll lend your skills to strengthen urban development communication—bridging complex ideas with clear, impactful prose. You’ll be embedded in global initiatives, crafting materials that reach stakeholders, policymakers, and communities.

Key Responsibilities & Qualifications

Though the detailed job description is available through the official portal, here are common expectations for this kind of role:

  • Draft, edit, and polish articles, reports, press releases, web content, and newsletters.
  • Ensure consistency of tone, style guide adherence, and clarity in messaging.
  • Collaborate with program teams, communications units, and external stakeholders.
  • Translate technical urban planning or sustainability topics into engaging content.

  • Ability to write for diverse audiences—from technical experts to local communities.
  • Familiarity with sustainable urban development issues, climate resilience, and equitable growth.

Application Deadline & Timeline

The call is open now, but hurry — applications close 15 October 2025. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply before that date to maximize consideration.

Given the timeline, don’t delay in preparing your CV, writing samples, and a thoughtful cover letter that highlights your storytelling ability and alignment with UN-Habitat’s mission.

Why This Role Matters

Global South communities and informal settlements are disproportionately affected by climate change, lack of infrastructure, and inadequate representation. UN-Habitat’s work is central to rebalancing that disparity, and communications professionals play a strategic role in:

  • Making complex data accessible and inspiring action.
  • Elevating community voices, not just institutional narratives.
  • Bridging the gap between on-the-ground realities and global policy conversations.

By projecting stories of resilience, innovation, and partnership, this role contributes directly to equitable urban futures.
