This transformative opportunity is designed for individuals with strong academic potential and a demonstrated commitment to leadership and community service who have overcome barriers to education.
The program provides full scholarships for online master’s and postgraduate diploma degrees at one of the world’s leading universities. It aims to nurture a new generation of visionary leaders committed to sustainable development, social justice, and climate action across Africa.
Study Online, Learn Globally
Online learning at the University of Edinburgh offers an innovative and flexible way to earn a world-class qualification while continuing to work and contribute locally. All online degrees are fully equivalent to on-campus qualifications, ensuring scholars receive the same level of academic excellence and recognition.
Applicants can apply for either:
- Online Master’s programmes (part-time, up to three years)
- Online Postgraduate Diplomas (part-time, up to two years)
Master’s degrees are intended for those seeking to deepen their expertise in a specific field, while postgraduate diplomas are ideal for professionals exploring a career shift or seeking to expand their skills in a new area.

Scholarships are offered for selected online degrees focused on global development, health, climate, and data-driven innovation. These include:

Applicants must hold an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from an African university and provide proof of graduation by the application deadline. Those who already possess a postgraduate qualification are not eligible for the online master’s route.
Building Climate Leaders
All Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Edinburgh participate in a Climate Leadership Programme, reflecting the Foundation’s dedication to tackling the global climate crisis. Through workshops, mentoring, and innovation challenges, the programme empowers young leaders with the knowledge, networks, and tools to drive sustainable change across Africa.
Participants also engage in the Climate Enterprise School, a week-long training programme focused on sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation, helping scholars turn ideas into impactful solutions.
Scholarship Benefits
The online scholarship covers full tuition fees, provides an academic stipend for internet and laptop access, and includes additional disability support when required. Scholars benefit from mentorship, leadership training, and participation in a global community of changemakers. They also have the opportunity to attend an in-person gathering and receive dedicated guidance from an Online Coordinator.
Application Details
Applications for the 2026/27 academic year open on 14 October 2025 at 10:00 a.m. (British Summer Time). Applicants must first apply for the scholarship; successful candidates will then be invited to apply for admission to their chosen programme. An online information session will take place on 16 October 2025 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. (BST) to help prospective scholars navigate the process.
