The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is pleased to announce the opening of its Internship Programme for 2025. This program offers a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in international development, particularly in the fields of agriculture and rural development.

Young people provide invaluable knowledge, ideas and energy to society and the workplace. That’s why IFAD offers six-month internship opportunities to recent university graduates or current students specializing in areas of work relevant to IFAD’s mission. Interns may pursue an additional six-month internship, accessing a different learning experience and broadening their exposure to IFAD’s areas of work.

The internship programme provides a monthly allowance. Moreover, to further promote geographic diversity, IFAD offers a higher monthly allowance (contributing to housing and travel expenses) to interns from developing countries who need to travel to their duty station. 

Candidates must meet the following criteria: 

  • Be 30 years of age or younger.  
  • Be enrolled in an accredited university or graduate school, have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies and have attended courses in the last 24 months; or have completed university studies at an undergraduate or postgraduate level within the last 24 months. 

  • Be fluent in English. Knowledge of another IFAD official language (Arabic, French or Spanish) and/or any other language may be necessary, depending on the region of assignment. 

Organizational Setting

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is an international financial institution and a specialized United Nations agency dedicated to eradicating rural poverty and hunger. It does so by investing in rural people. IFAD finances programmes and projects that increase agricultural productivity and raise rural incomes, and advocates at the local, national and international level for policies that contribute to rural transformation.

Job Role

The regular Internship Programme (IP) and Enhanced Internship Programme (EIP) offer a unique learning experience of six months to recent university graduates or students who are currently specializing in areas of work relevant to IFAD’s mission. Candidates for the Internship Programme must be 30 years old or less and must be enrolled in an accredited university or graduate school, have attended courses in the last 12 months, and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies when joining the programme.

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • be enrolled in a university or graduate school, have attended courses in the last 12 months, and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies when joining IFAD through the programme or;
  • have recently completed university studies at the undergraduate or postgraduate level;

  • be fluent in English; fluency in other IFAD official languages is an asset. In the case of interns recruited in IFAD country office, multi country office or regional office locations, fluency in the main country language may be required;
  • be 30 years of age or younger. The Enhanced Internship Programme, in particular, is designed to enhance geographic distribution of staff at IFAD and is open to candidates who meet the above eligibility criteria and who are not based in Rome.

In addition to a monthly allowance, Enhanced Internship Programme interns receive a housing and travel allowance.
